Located north of Puget Sound and out of the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, Anacortes is situated in what geologists refer to as the Puget Trough. Glacial action created the topography, the many islands scattered throughout the San Juan Archipelago and the Canadian Gulf Islands.

The altitude within the city limits of Anacortes ranges from sea level to 1,270 feet at the summit of Mount Erie.
